RemSorb®+ ZVI Colloidal Carbon

Integrated Adsorption & Reductive Destruction for Chlorinated Contaminants

Product Overview

RemSorb®+ is a highly engineered colloidal activated carbon infused with microscale Zero Valent Iron (ZVI) to deliver both rapid adsorption and complete reductive destruction of chlorinated and halogenated organic contaminants. Designed for in situ injection, RemSorb+ forms a reactive barrier that immediately binds pollutants and then degrades them abiotically within the carbon matrix—preventing rebound and eliminating harmful breakdown products such as vinyl chloride.

With superior mobility, stability, and reactivity, RemSorb+ offers a powerful treatment option for source zones, plume hotspots, and sites requiring fast, sustained performance.

Features & Benefits

Dual-Mechanism Treatment

Combines the adsorption capacity of activated carbon with the reductive power of ZVI to immobilize and destroy contaminants in place.

Rapid Initial Reduction

Activated carbon provides immediate contaminant capture, while ZVI initiates fast abiotic breakdown.

Treats Free and Dissolved Phases

The carbon matrix can adsorb dissolved contaminants and free-phase material, enhancing the reach and effectiveness of ZVI.

Complete, Abiotic Dechlorination

Reduces chlorinated compounds fully to ethane/ethene without producing vinyl chloride or other intermediate byproducts.

High Mobility & Permanent Deposition

Colloidal particle size is optimized for subsurface transport, followed by stable anchoring within the treatment zone.

Long-Lasting Reactive Barrier

A single injection establishes a reactive zone with durable, multi-year treatment capacity.

How It Works

RemSorb®+ uses an integrated adsorption–reduction mechanism:

  1. Activated Carbon Adsorption
Contaminants are immediately drawn onto the large surface area of the colloidal carbon particles.
  2. ZVI Reductive Dechlorination
Iron nanoparticles embedded in the carbon matrix react with adsorbed chlorinated compounds through abiotic reduction.
    • Pollutants are broken down directly on the reactive surface.
    • The process drives complete dechlorination to harmless end products.
  3. Permanent Immobilization
The carbon matrix binds contaminants tightly, preventing migration and minimizing rebound potential.

This combination provides fast initial cleanup and long-term contaminant destruction within the same injection event.

Applications

RemSorb®+ is ideal for the in situ treatment of:

  • Chlorinated ethenes (PCE, TCE, DCE, VC)
  • Chlorinated methanes and ethanes
  • Halogenated hydrocarbons
  • Mixed plumes
  • Mobile and sorbed contaminants

Common deployment strategies include:

  • Reactive barriers
  • Treatment of source areas and hot spots
  • Plume cutoff zones
  • High-performance polishing layers following ISCO or other aggressive remediation techniques

Delivery & Handling

RemSorb®+ is supplied as a stable, pumpable suspension suitable for:

  • Direct-push injection
  • Injection through wells or valved piping
  • Low-pressure subsurface delivery

No activation or complex preparation is needed. The product is designed for consistent, controlled distribution throughout the target zone.

Technical Support

Carus Europe provides comprehensive support for RemSorb®+ applications, including:

  • Dosing calculations and design optimization
  • Injection planning and field guidance
  • Treatment zone modeling
  • Integration with combined remedy approaches
