RemSurf® Reagent

Surfactant Blend for Enhanced Mobilization and Removal of NAPLs and Adsorbed Contaminants

Product Overview

RemSurf® is a high-performance, biodegradable surfactant blend formulated to mobilize free-phase and residual non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPLs) and increase the solubilization of adsorbed organic contaminants. By reducing surface and interfacial tension, RemSurf enhances the recoverability of trapped phases and improves the effectiveness of downstream remediation technologies.

Engineered for versatility and reliable field performance, RemSurf is suitable for a wide range of contaminants and can be seamlessly integrated with chemical oxidation or bioremediation strategies to accelerate cleanup and reduce rebound.

Features & Benefits

Effective NAPL Mobilization

Lowers surface and interfacial tension, allowing free-phase and residual hydrocarbons to detach from soil particles and move toward extraction points.

Compatible With Strong Oxidants

Remains active in the presence of oxidants such as permanganate or activated persulfate, making it ideal for combined remedy approaches.

Flexible Application Methods

Can be applied through soil flushing, push-pull tests, vertical circulation wells, or tailored injection programs based on site-specific conditions.

Enhances Treatment Efficiency

Improves contaminant bioavailability and contact with oxidants, boosting the performance of ISCO, aerobic treatments, and anaerobic processes.

Biodegradable & Environmentally Responsible

Formulated with biodegradable surfactants to minimize environmental impact while maintaining robust mobilization capability.

Reduces Rebound Potential

By mobilizing and removing adsorbed or residual contaminant mass, RemSurf helps prevent post-treatment concentration rebound.

How It Works

RemSurf works by modifying the physical interactions between contaminants and the soil matrix:

  1. Surface Tension Reduction
Surfactants reduce the adhesion between NAPLs and soil particles, enabling movement and recovery.
  2. Enhanced Solubilization
Adsorbed contaminants become more available for extraction or subsequent treatment.
  3. Mobilization & Collection
Mobilized phases can be recovered using pumping systems, or directed into zones where oxidants or microbes are more effective.
  4. Synergy With Other Remedies
When paired with ISCO reagents or bioremediation substrates, RemSurf increases the accessibility of otherwise trapped contaminant mass.

This results in greater mass removal, more efficient cleanup, and improved long-term site stability.

Applications

RemSurf is ideal for treatment of:

  • LNAPLs and DNAPLs
  • Petroleum hydrocarbons
  • Chlorinated organics
  • PAHs and other hydrophobic compounds
  • Residual and sorbed contaminant mass that hinders full remediation

Typical use cases include:

  • Soil flushing and hydraulic extraction
  • Push-pull mobilization events
  • Circulation and recirculation well systems
  • Pre-treatment to enhance ISCO or bioremediation
  • Treatment of source zones and smear zones

Delivery & Handling

RemSurf is supplied as a liquid surfactant blend and can be:

  • Injected directly into the subsurface
  • Delivered through existing wells or direct-push points
  • Tailored in concentration for site-specific conditions
  • Used in conjunction with oxidants, biological treatments, or extraction systems

The formulation is stable, easy to handle, and designed for controlled, efficient subsurface distribution.

Technical Support

Carus Europe provides full project support, including:

  • Surfactant dose optimization
  • Mobilization shake tests or column studies
  • Injection planning and field application guidance
  • Integration into combined remedy strategies
  • Performance monitoring recommendations
