Pesticides

Advanced In Situ Solutions for Persistent Organic Contaminants

Overview

Pesticides and other persistent organic contaminants present complex remediation challenges due to their resistance to natural attenuation and strong adsorption to soil matrices. Many chlorinated and halogenated pesticides can remain in the subsurface for decades, requiring advanced in situ treatment approaches to control migration and reduce risk.

Carus Europe offers a flexible portfolio of adsorption, destruction, and biological solutions designed to contain, degrade, and stabilize pesticide contamination in soil and groundwater.

Pesticide Challenges

Pesticides often exhibit:

  • Slow or incomplete biodegradation
  • Strong sorption to soils, limiting natural breakdown
  • Formation of toxic intermediate byproducts
  • Need for combined adsorption and degradation strategies

These characteristics require remediation technologies that address both immediate containment and long-term destruction.

Our Solutions

RemSorb® & RemSorb®+

Adsorption & Reductive Destruction

RemSorb® colloidal carbon rapidly adsorbs dissolved pesticide compounds, creating in situ adsorption barriers that prevent plume migration.
RemSorb®+ enhances this approach by incorporating Zero Valent Iron (ZVI) to actively reduce and destroy halogenated pesticides within the carbon matrix.

Key Benefits:

  • Immediate plume containment
  • Long-term subsurface stability
  • Reductive destruction of halogenated compounds

Effective for source zones and dissolved plumes

Anaerobic Bioremediation Technologies

Biological Treatment of Chlorinated Pesticides

For suitable site conditions, carbon-based bioremediation solutions such as ABC+® and CAP 18® can promote reductive dechlorination of chlorinated pesticides by establishing sustained anaerobic conditions and supporting microbial degradation pathways.

RemZeo® Iron Zeolites

Adsorption & Oxidative Destruction

RemZeo® combines adsorption on iron-modified zeolites with catalytic oxidation, creating a regenerable treatment zone capable of degrading persistent organic pesticides. Adsorbed contaminants can be oxidized in place through controlled peroxide activation, restoring adsorption capacity and extending system life.

Key Benefits:

Regenerable treatment zones for long-term performance

Rapid contaminant adsorption

In situ oxidative destruction

Effective under natural groundwater pH conditions
