Enhanced In Situ Chemical Reduction for Chlorinated Solvents
ABC®+ (Anaerobic BioChem+) is an advanced in situ chemical reduction (ISCR) amendment designed to support enhanced reductive dechlorination of chlorinated solvents in soil and groundwater.
Formulated on a site-specific basis, ABC+ combines a controlled carbon substrate with zero valent iron (ZVI) to deliver both immediate abiotic reduction and long-term biological treatment, making it well suited for source zone remediation under strongly reducing conditions.

Applications
ABC+ is used in in situ remediation projects targeting chlorinated solvent contamination, particularly where sustained reductive conditions are required to support sequential dechlorination.
By integrating chemical and biological reduction mechanisms, ABC+ supports both rapid mass reduction and continued contaminant transformation over time.
Typical applications include treatment of:
- Tetrachloroethene (PCE)
- Trichloroethene (TCE)
- Dichloroethene (DCE)
- Vinyl chloride (VC)
- Other chlorinated ethenes and halogenated organic compounds
How ABC ®+ Works
ABC+ is designed to promote enhanced reductive dechlorination (ERD) through the combined action of zero valent iron (ZVI) and a long-lasting carbon substrate.
- Zero Valent Iron (ZVI):
Acts as a powerful electron donor, enabling rapid abiotic reductive dechlorination through reactions occurring on the surface of the iron particles. - Carbon Substrate (Anaerobic BioChem / ABC-Olé):
Provides short- and long-term nutrients to support anaerobic microbial communities and helps establish and maintain strongly reducing subsurface conditions.
As the iron corrodes, ferrous iron and hydrogen are produced—both of which further contribute to reductive conditions and serve as energy sources for anaerobic bacteria. The presence of a natural co-solvent also allows ABC+ to perform effectively in areas where free phase contamination may be present.
Why ABC ®+
- Combines immediate chemical reduction with sustained biological treatment
- Supports complete dechlorination pathways
- Effective under strongly reducing conditions
- Adaptable to site-specific hydrogeologic conditions
