RemLock® Iron Oxides

Colloidal Iron Oxide Suspension for In Situ Heavy Metal Immobilization

Product Overview

RemLock® is a specially formulated colloidal iron oxide suspension designed to immobilize heavy metals and metalloids directly within the subsurface. Made from naturally occurring iron oxide minerals treated for superior performance, RemLock forms a stable in situ adsorption barrier that captures dissolved metals as groundwater flows through the treatment zone.

Engineered for exceptional mobility, permanence, and environmental compatibility, RemLock provides a sustainable, low-impact alternative to pump-and-treat, excavation, and other disruptive remediation methods.

Features & Benefits

Highly Effective Metal Adsorption

Demonstrates strong affinity for contaminants such as arsenic, lead, mercury, chromium, manganese, and other dissolved metals.

Engineered Surface Chemistry

Special surface treatment maintains a favorable negative charge even at low pH, improving adsorption performance across a wide range of groundwater conditions.

High Mobility for Predictable Injection

Colloidal stabilization ensures smooth, low-pressure delivery and uniform distribution throughout the targeted subsurface interval.

Permanent Immobilization

Once deposited, the iron oxide particles anchor securely to the soil matrix, creating a lasting treatment zone without the risk of contaminant remobilization.

Environmentally Safe Composition

Formulated with food-grade components and naturally occurring iron oxide minerals that are non-toxic and compatible with sensitive environments.

Ideal for Challenging Geologies

Suitable for saturated zones, vadose zone applications, and areas where hydraulic conductivity or site access limits traditional treatment options.

How It Works

RemLock® uses finely milled iron oxide particles suspended in a stable colloidal form. Once injected:

  1. Subsurface Distribution
The colloidal suspension travels through soil pores, dispersing evenly throughout the treatment zone.
  2. Particle Attachment
Particles adhere to the soil matrix, forming a permeable in situ adsorption barrier.
  3. Metal Adsorption
As groundwater flows through the barrier, dissolved metals bind strongly to the iron oxide surface through sorption and co-precipitation mechanisms.
  4. Long-Term Stability
The minerals are thermodynamically stable under environmental conditions, preventing release even with pH fluctuations.

This creates a long-lasting, passive, and maintenance-free solution for heavy metal remediation.

Applications

RemLock® is ideal for immobilizing:

  • Arsenic
  • Lead
  • Mercury
  • Chromium
  • Iron & manganese
  • Other dissolved metals and metalloids

Typical deployment scenarios include:

  • Reactive barriers for plume containment
  • Source area treatment
  • Vadose zone stabilization
  • Prevention of metals leaching
  • Mixed contaminant sites when paired with organic treatment products

RemLock can also be co-applied with carbon-based adsorbents (such as RemSorb® or RemSorb®+) for combined organic and inorganic contaminant treatment.

Delivery & Handling

RemLock is provided as a ready-to-inject colloidal suspension designed for:

  • Direct-push injection
  • Injection through wells or perforated piping
  • Low-pressure delivery for uniform distribution

The product’s natural composition and stable formulation make it easy to handle and safe to use in sensitive environments.

Technical Support

Carus Europe supports RemLock implementation with:

  • Design consultation and dosing recommendations
  • Injection planning and field support
  • Performance evaluation strategies
  • Blending guidance for combined remedies

Our remediation specialists can help optimize system design and ensure reliable long-term results.
